Roger Federer explained how he made the decision to retire.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion retired from tennis in 2022.


Probably could have finished earlier. Because it almost doesn`t matter if you win a few more titles and stay on tour for a couple more years. But in the moment you don`t think so. The most important thing is the next day, the next training session, the next rally, the next match, the next week. I loved it, I loved it and still love it. But I don`t have this inner angst that I would still like to be a part of it.


This step, as I expected, was good and joyful. I have long understood that if tennis ends for me, I need to be prepared for it, because you don`t know when an injury might happen that will become decisive. Life can`t just revolve around tennis. I think that`s one of my strengths - thinking about tennis when I`m on the court and changing my mindset off the court. I think this helped me stay motivated and not get tired of playing all the time and thinking only about tennis.
